Fit for new challenges

Schiess is extending its programme of retrofitting large machines
Fit for new challenges

Most older large machines, which are still basically in excellent condition, can be modernised to bring them up-to-date or indeed equipped with so much modern technology that they are practically new.

On the occasion of the METAV in Düsseldorf, Schiess GmbH, today a subsidiary of the world-wide active Shenyang Machine Tool Group (SYMG), is introducing its new expanded retrofitting programme. Existing machine tools, irrespective of size, can be modernised and brought up-to-date on site anywhere in the world by the Schiess Service Team. In the case of major work, machines can also be transported back to the factory in Aschersleben. “Most older machines are in an excellent basic condition“, explains Steffen Warias. “After their modernisation they are even better than ever before“, according to the Service Manager at Schiess. The long experience of the company in the development and manufacture of machine tools – founded in 1866, Schiess can look back on 150 years of experience with large machine tools – means that the technical staff both past and present possess great technical competence. “We are just as familiar with older machines as we are with the possibilities open to us through ultra-modern technology”, emphasises Steffen Warias. The range of retrofitting possibilities extend from a modernisation of the machine up to modifications necessary because of a change in technical production requirements.

Retrofitting large machines brings particular advantages
A case in point is the modernisation of a portal milling machine PF-F-150–530 Waldrich at Alstom in Budapest. The slide coatings of the base-table group were replaced, the slides were reground, the table drive was replaced and a direct linear measuring system was incorporated. The engineers replaced the trapezoidal spindles of the adjusting system with revolving ball spindles on the portal and cross member, fitted a direct linear measuring system and new drive motors giving increased speed to the feed axes of the cutter support, and supplied a new cutter support with hydrostatic guides. In addition, a completely new control system was installed, a Sinumerik 840D. Lb. •
