Used machine dealers in Nordrhein-Westfalen are pleased to see Usetec at its new venue in Cologne
The move and the new fair date in 2012 have been well received

What is the reaction of used machine dealers in Nordrhein-Westfalen to the move of the fair for used technology to Cologne? Will the proximity encourage them to invite fair visitors to visit their own companies? Will there be more machines at the fair? We asked these and other questions , and received the following revealing answers.

On April 26th “Usetec supported by Resale”, the international fair for used technology, celebrates its premiere at the Cologne fairground. Kölnmesse GmbH, Hess GmbH from Weingarten (the former organiser of Resale) and the technical association for tool and machine-tool wholesaling (FDM) in Bonn want to raise the used machine tool fair, formally held in Karlsruhe under the name Resale, to a new status in Cologne.

In an informal poll of dealers in Nordrhein-Westfalen, a great majority of these welcomed the move. Although Richard Lang thought that interested potential customers would be prepared to travel anywhere, the Managing Director of Richard Lang Werkzeugmaschinen in Erkrath, an old hand when it comes to used machines, also appreciates the concentration of dealers and potential customers, mainly from medium-sized companies in the Sauerland and in the Ruhrgebiet, and is pleased that these are now nearer to the fair in Cologne. Dieter Feyen, Managing Director of Feyen Maschinen GmbH in Krefeld, did not at first attach much importance to the move to Cologne: „As a dealer, it is the fair itself which interests me, rather than its site.“ But he has come to realise that the move can only be advantageous for him, because the fair is now closer to his company headquarters. As a member of the FDM and of the European Dealer Association EAMTM, Feyen is of course also present as an exhibitor at the fair.
Volker Kemmerich, Managing Director of Kemmerich GmbH in Leverkusen, is still a bit hesitant: „We will not know if the change of venue will be positive or negative until we see how the fair goes and how it is accepted by customers.“ He was an old exhibitor at Resale and will now have a stand at Usetec. Herbert Ulke, Managing Director of Franz Hoppe GmbH in Korschenbroich, is also undecided: “The move will have some effect because the fair is now on our doorstep.“ He is not yet sure whether this will be of advantage. It is in any case the first time for more than 10 years that he is exhibiting at a fair.
„I am all for the move“, says Holger Wirths, Managing Director of Wirths GMW in Ennepetal, who will be exhibiting at Usetec. The same is true for the Managing Director of Walter Kames GmbH in Düsseldorf, Alexander Kames: „Cologne is bigger, has a larger hinterland, and is certainly of greater interest.“ For this reason Kames is also exhibiting at the fair. Klaus Klitschke is even more enthusiastic about the new venue in Cologne: „The city of Cologne is known worldwide whereas Karlsruhe was almost provincial.“ The Managing Director of Schiess Moweg GmbH in Mönchengladbach also finds Cologne much better, not least because there is an airport close by which makes the fair much easier to reach for international customers. As a member of the FDM he is of course also an exhibitor.
Machine tool fairs are often used by local manufacturers for organising visits to their own companies for potential customers. In this question, however, the used machine dealers are more reserved. Dieter Feyen in Krefeld and Alexander Kames in Düsseldorf are not planning any such visits. Klaus Klitschke in Mönchengladbach has not really thought about this, but, „if a visitor to the fair wants to visit us, it’s only a stone’s throw to Mönchengladbach“. Herbert Ulke in Korschenbroich is of the same opinion: „We will not know until the fair whether we’ll invite potential customers who want to see a particular machine to visit us.“ However, he thinks that most visitors will prefer to spend their limited time at the fair in order to get information. Volker Kemmerich in Leverkusen is a bit more positive: „Because the fair is so close, it would be no problem to invite visitors should they show an interest. Our showroom is in Langenfeld, it would take hardly any time to look at a machine there.“ Michael Tropp, Managing Director of Michael Tropp GmbH in Hagen, is not so sure: „In theory it would be no problem to invite visitors to our warehouse. However, as my machines are stored in a dismantled state, there would be no point in it.“ There is, however, one theme in particular which has developed over the years. Visitors want to see machines, whereas exhibitors often only show the brochures illustrating the machines which they have on offer. Dealers such as Volker Kemmerich, Klaus Klitschke from Schiess Moweg or Alexander Kames will show machines in any case. Dieter Feyen would not even exhibit at the fair if he had no machines to show: „A square box, a table, a chair, and three pictures on the wall, that’s no for me, I would rather stay at home.“ However, he agrees that each exhibitor must make this decision himself. Michael Tropp would also not go to a fair without machines, but he also has quite specific reasons why he is not going to Usetec. „My machines are simply too big, the costs would be too high. To disassemble in the factory, transport and reassemble on the fair would cost me 40,000 Euro.“
Resale was always traditionally timed to coincide with the Hanover Fair so that more international visitors to Hanover could be tempted to visit the used machine fair. However, the organisers have moved the date for 2012 to coincide with the Hardware Fair. The idea is that visitors buy a combi-ticket to enable them to visit both fairs. This change of date does not seem to have reached all participating dealers. Most of those who have been informed can see the advantage. „Visitors to the Hardware Fair are often also potentially interested in used machines, this applies to both visitors and to exhibitors“, maintains Volker Kemmerich. A combi-ticket could thus be an advantage. Herbert Ulke agrees: „In this way we will have many visitors who‘ll come to our stand just by chance.“ For this reason, the combi-ticket is a good idea. Klaus Klitschke thinks that the change of date to coincide with the Hardware Fair can only be of advantage: „It is certain to bring a synergy effect for both fairs.“
Kurt Radermacher, Managing Director of the trade association FDM, underlines the importance of the change of date in 2012: „Both fairs attract a lot of visitors from abroad. A lot of these visitors will be interested in both machine tools and industrial requirements. This overlapping will be advantageous for exhibitors on both fairs.“
