If insolvent businesses cannot be saved, they are sold at auction. Roland Müller, Managing Director of Proventura Industrie-Auktion West GmbH, is very experienced in this field. In this article he gives a short insight into his work and describes how auctions work.

The market place for used machines is the auction. Roland Müller, Managing Director and 50% owner of Proventura Industrie-Auktion West, in Heiligenhaus near Düsseldorf, is an accredited auctioneer and expert. His great strengths are long experience in the machine tool trade and his activity as valuer and technical expert in machine tools at a large Hamburg firm of auctioneers. In 2005 – after his branch in the Rheinland had been, as so many others, closed down – he got to know in Göttingen Johann Zimmermann, the owner of Proventura Industrie-Auktion GmbH which had been founded in 1997, and together with him opened the West Branch.

Proventura Industrial Auctions works for receivers, credit companies, leasing companies, tax offices, law courts and independent customers.
“In the first 1 ½ years after starting the company in Heiligenhaus I contacted many new customers”, says Müller looking back. He got his first orders from receivers with whom he had taken up contact and introduced himself as valuer and expert. Subsequently more and more approached him spontaneously. “For the past 3 years I just have not had time to go out looking for customers”, he says with satisfaction. The receivers came to him. Proventura had already established its credentials.
When a receiver approaches him, the first thing he has to do is to present an expert report and assessment. “We do a good deal of research and establish liquidation value and the value should the business continue,ik for each individual machine and item”, he reveals. After submitting this report the first stage of the procedure is completed. The receiver then tries to find a solution which enables the business to continue. This may take 3 – 6 months. “If he is unsuccessful, which is the case in about 20% of insolvencies, he comes back to us”, says Müller. Then it is up to Proventura to decide on the next step. “We prefer an auction on site, if this is at all possible”, explains the expert. Individual sales are, however, also possible, e.g. if just one car needs to be sold.
The auction is announced in newspapers and in trade magazines. “We send out several thousand catalogues to current potential customers and also list the items to be sold in the internet “, says Müller. Anyone interested can view the machines beforehand, in the case of small companies a few days before, with large companies actually on the eve of the auction. Legally, 2 hours are allowed for this inspection.
During the auction each item is announced together with its reserve price. Because of the risk involved, only known customers are allowed to bid by telephone. In the case of written bids, an employee represents the bidder as if he were present. Payment is either in cash or cheque with a bank guarantee. If the purchase has to be financed, this has to be clarified in advance, and the auctioneer helps only in establishing contact. “If the customer has not got a good rating, there is nothing I can do to help”, says Müller with regret.
When asked about the current market situation Müller sees a reduced demand for machine tools. In other trades, however, e.g. in the building trade, business is still good.
