„The Usetec is an enrichment for the Cologne range of fairs“
Oliver P. Kuhrt, Managing Director of Koelnmesse „The international appeal of Usetec, with about 30% exhibitors from abroad, is certainly no less than that of Resale”
The second-hand machine fair Resale, which existed under this name for 16 years, has been re-born as Usetec in Cologne. Oliver P. Kuhrt, Managing Director of Koelnmesse, talks about advantages of the venue and future developments.

Herr Kuhrt, compared with your huge fairs such as the Furniture Fair, Photokina or Anuga, what is the significance of a small fair such as Usetec for Koelnmesse?

In the past year Koelnmesse organised 86 events at home and abroad, of which 13 were completely new. You can see from this that, in addition to our traditional fairs, we are constantly investing in new ideas. We are very pleased that we have been able to expand the Koelnmesse portfolio with such an international fair as Usetec. As an international fair for second-hand technology, it is both an enrichment and an important contribution to the extension of our fair programme in the field of investment goods.
What are the particular attractions that Cologne as a fair centre can offer to its visitors coming from more than 100 countries?
Cologne is a prime location in the heart of Europe, and is very easy and convenient to visit. Ten motorways converge on the city, coming from all directions. The main station has high-speed train connections to Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, Hamburg, London and Paris, and is only a stone’s throw from the fairground. The Köln-Bonn Airport is an important hub for low-cost carriers, and offers many international connections. From the airport, visitors and exhibitors to Usetec can reach the fairground with the metropolitan rail connection in only 15 minutes.
The European EAMTM association is not taking part in Usetec in Cologne. Has this had any effect on the number of exhibitors?
So far we have received 55 applications from EAMTM companies in 11 countries. This shows that member firms are happy to take part. Moreover, we have good contacts to the international associations Duma (Holland) and AIMUU (Italy), in which many active or former EAMTM members are organised. These associations have joint stands at Usetec 2011. The international appeal of Usetec, with about 30 % exhibitors from abroad, is certainly no less than that at Resale.
The press mentioned a possible closure of the fair buildings. Have these problems been clarified?
There is now no question of closing the fair halls, this has been clear since the beginning of the discussions about rent for the halls and the echo in the press. All our fairs will take place as planned now and in the future. At the same time, the size of the payment which the city of Cologne – and thus indirectly the Koelnmesse – has to make for the use of the Northern group of halls is still the subject of a court case which is being heard at the Cologne district court. Whatever the outcome of this case, the Koelnmesse will continue to be able to use the halls with no restriction.
You have announced that in 2012 the dates of Usetec will be moved forward to coincide with those of the Eisenwarenmesse. Why have you abandoned the coordination of the dates with those of the Hanover Fair?
The International Eisenwarenmesse is the largest B2B platform for hardware in the world. The fair is unique, especially in the field of tools and industrial equipment. Together with Usetec, there is a significant overlapping of target customers. At the same time, both fairs attract a large number of international exhibitors and visitors. It makes sense for us to use the synergy effect, and it is especially for foreign visitors a great advantage that both fairs take place on the same fairground and can be visited simultaneously.
